This article “Impact of e-portfolios on learning”, which was put together by Becta, is about an investigation regarding the impact that e-portfolios can have on learners in schools and on educational and work-based learning.
The article states that key findings have been that e-portfolios were found to be most effective in learning especially when it was made as part of a joined up teaching and learning approach. It was found that e-portfolios support the learning outcomes of students with a wide range of abilities. E-portfolios make progress and attainment easier to monitor by both teachers and students because they could view and revisit the work that has been done by the student and this reveals development, achievements, strengths and weaknesses.
I was interested by this article on e-portfolios for in my professional experience class we have spoken about portfolios in terms of assessment in order to show students work but in a hardcopy form. The idea of using an e-portfolio to me meant that the ways that assessment could be carried out in the classroom can be made more interesting and easier to access. Using technology to create portfolios of student’s work could be an easier way for teachers to have access to students’ work for many years and it would be a way to monitor a student’s progress throughout schooling. Teachers would also be able to provide multiple copies to various family members without the need to photocopy multiply copies of student’s work which takes up lots of time. Parents would be able to easily see their children’s work throughout the years by using this type of technology to play back their children’s work on the computer or on a digital screen. I personally would consider using e-portfolios in the classroom.
